What Is AS 4100 and Why Does It Matter on Every Steel Project?

The Standard That Underpins Every Steel Build in Australia

If you are working on any construction project in NSW that involves structural steel, AS 4100 is the standard that governs how that steel is designed and fabricated. What Is AS 4100?

AS 4100 is the Australian Standard for Steel Structures. It was first published in 1990 and has been updated several times since, with the current version incorporating amendments that reflect modern fabrication practice. The standard sets out the design and fabrication requirements for structural steel members and connections used in buildings and other structures across Australia.

The standard covers a broad range of requirements: material specifications and grades, member design for tension, compression, bending and shear, connection design, fabrication tolerances, and quality management requirements. It is the technical backbone that structural engineers use when designing any steel frame, beam or column.

What Does AS 4100 Require From a Fabricator?

From a fabrication standpoint, AS 4100 sets out specific tolerances for how steel members must be cut, drilled, assembled and checked. These tolerances define how much deviation from the specified dimension is acceptable before a piece is considered non-compliant.

For example, the standard sets out maximum permitted deviations in length, straightness, end squareness and connection geometry. A beam cut to the wrong length, a column that is out of plumb, or a connection plate welded in the wrong position can all represent an AS 4100 non-conformance. Catching these issues in the workshop, before steel reaches site, is fundamental to efficient installation.

AS 4100 also requires that fabricators have quality management systems in place — processes for checking drawings before fabrication, inspecting work during fabrication, and documenting the work completed. For significant projects, this may require a formal inspection and test plan.

Material Grades and Mill Certificates Under AS 4100

AS 4100 specifies which material grades are acceptable for structural applications. The most common grade used in Australian construction is Grade 350, which has a minimum yield strength of 350 megapascals. For hollow sections, Grade C350 or C450 is typical. Higher strength grades are available for specific applications.

Critically, AS 4100 requires that the steel used in a structure can be traced back to its manufacturing source. This is where mill certificates — also called test certificates or mill test reports — become essential. A mill certificate is issued by the steel mill and records the chemical composition and mechanical properties of a specific batch of steel. It is the evidence that the material meets the grade specified on the engineer’s drawings.

How Does AS 4100 Relate to AS/NZS 1554?

AS 4100 and AS/NZS 1554 work together as a pair. AS 4100 is the design and fabrication standard; AS/NZS 1554 is the welding standard. AS 4100 specifies what weld category is required for a particular connection — whether it is a Category SP (structural purpose) weld or a Category GP (general purpose) weld — and AS/NZS 1554 specifies how that weld must be executed and inspected to achieve the required category.

For structural steel projects across Sydney, both standards apply on any building that requires a construction certificate and structural engineering sign-off. Your fabricator’s welding procedures, welder qualifications and inspection records should all be maintained in accordance with AS/NZS 1554.

What Should You Ask Your Fabricator About Compliance?

Before placing an order for structural steel fabrication on any project, there are four compliance questions worth asking your fabricator directly.

First, do they fabricate to AS 4100? The answer should be an unqualified yes, with the ability to provide documentation if required on significant projects. Second, can they provide mill certificates for all steel supplied? Again, the answer should be yes without hesitation. Third, do their welders hold current qualifications under AS/NZS 2980, and are their welding procedures qualified to AS/NZS 1554? Fourth, do they have a documented quality management system for fabrication inspection?
