Why Reading Steel Drawings Matters Before Fabrication Starts

Most delays and errors in structural steel fabrication trace back to a single cause: misread or misunderstood drawings. The Difference Between Engineering Drawings and Shop Drawings

Before diving into how to read a drawing, it is worth understanding that there are two types of drawings involved in a structural steel project — and they are not the same thing.

Engineering drawings, produced by your structural engineer, show the design intent. They tell you what the structure needs to do: where the beams go, what sections are required, what loads they carry, and how the connections are designed. Engineering drawings are the legal document of record for the structure.

Shop drawings, produced by the fabricator based on the engineering drawings, translate the design into manufacturing instructions. They show every piece of steel individually, with exact cut lengths, hole positions, weld details and any fabrication-specific notes. Key Elements on a Structural Steel Engineering Drawing

Every set of structural drawings will contain a title block, general notes, a plan view, elevation views, section views and connection details. Here is what each of those contains and what to look for.

The title block contains the project name, drawing number, revision status, engineer’s name and scale. Always check the revision number. On active projects, drawings are updated regularly and you need to confirm you are working from the latest version before sending anything to a fabricator.

General notes set out the standards, material grades and any project-specific requirements. On NSW structural steel projects, you will typically see references to AS 4100 for fabrication and AS/NZS 1554 for welding. Material grades are usually noted here — Grade 350 for standard structural members is common in Australia.

Plan views show the structure from above. For structural steel, this shows you where columns are located on the building grid, where beams span between them, and how the steel relates to the overall footprint of the building. Grid lines (numbered and lettered) are your navigation system across the drawing set.

Elevation views show the structure from the side. These are critical for understanding storey heights, beam levels and how the steel frame rises vertically. On multi-storey residential or commercial projects in Sydney, the elevation views confirm beam soffit heights and column splice locations.

How to Read Connection Details

Connection details are the most technically dense part of a structural steel drawing set, and they are the part most likely to create problems if misread. A connection detail shows how two or more members join together — how a beam connects to a column, how a brace fixes to a gusset plate, how a base plate sits on a concrete pad.

Each detail will show the weld category or bolt size, the plate thickness, the edge distances and the weld length or bolt pattern. When a fabricator quotes your job, these details are what they are pricing — a simple fin plate connection is very different in cost and time from a bolted moment connection or a welded full penetration butt weld.

If a detail is unclear or appears to conflict with the plan or elevation, that is an RFI — a Request for Information. Unresolved details that are assumed away are the single biggest cause of rework on Sydney construction projects.

What Are Section Marks and How Do You Follow Them?

Section marks appear as circles or arrows on plan and elevation views, with a letter or number inside. They tell you that a cross-section has been cut through the structure at that point and is shown elsewhere in the drawing set, usually on a detail sheet. The section view reveals internal geometry that cannot be seen in the plan or elevation — the depth of a beam, the thickness of a stiffener plate, the profile of a haunch.

Following section marks correctly is essential when checking that a fabricated piece will fit its intended location. If the elevation shows a 410 mm deep beam but the section at the connection point shows a haunch that drops the bottom flange below finished floor level, that information is in the section view, not in the main elevation.

Common Mistakes Builders Make When Reviewing Steel Drawings

The most common mistake is ignoring the revision cloud. When an engineer updates a drawing, the changed area is enclosed in a revision cloud — an irregular, cloud-shaped border. Changes outside the title block revision history are highlighted this way. Builders who work from printed drawings and do not track revisions risk building to an outdated specification.

The second most common mistake is reading a dimension off the wrong drawing. On complex projects with multiple sheets, dimensions on the architectural drawings and dimensions on the structural drawings do not always match — the structural drawing governs for steel, and discrepancies need to be resolved by the engineer, not assumed away on site.
